Prosthodontics, Full-Mouth Reconstruction

Prosthodontics, Full-Mouth Reconstruction, also known as dental prosthetics or prosthetic dentistry, is one of nine dental specialties recognized by the American Dental Association, Royal College of Dentists of Canada, and Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons.

Prosthodontics is the dental specialty pertaining to the diagnosis, treatment planning, rehabilitation, and maintenance of the oral function, comfort, appearance and health of patients with clinical conditions associated with missing or deficient teeth and/or oral and maxillofacial tissues by using biocompatible substitutes.

Due to extensive training, prosthodontists are required to treat complex cases, full-mouth rehabilitation, TMJ-related disorders, congenital disorders, and sleep apnea by planning and fabricating various prostheses.

What is a prosthodontic appliance?

Prosthodontics are permanent or removable devices that help improve the look and functioning of your smile. Examples include:

  • Crowns – Also known as “caps,” dental crows cover badly damaged teeth.
  • Bridges – These dental prosthetics replace one or more missing teeth in a row.
  • Dentures – These removable dental appliances help restore the function and appearance of your smile. Partial dentures replace a few missing teeth, while full dentures replace a whole row of teeth.
  • Dental implants – These threaded posts are placed in your jawbone to replace missing teeth. Once the implants are in place and your tissue has healed, the prosthodontist applies crowns, bridges, or dentures.
  • Inlays and onlays – These custom restorations help repair tooth structure when the tooth is too damaged for a filling.
  • Oral splints – Also called a night guard, bite guard, or occlusal splint, an oral splint is a hard plastic device that protects your teeth as you sleep. Oral splints are used for people with TMJ, bruxism, and obstructive sleep apnea.

What is the difference between a dentist and a prosthodontist?

A general dentist is a primary care provider who offers routine dental checkups and cleanings in addition to restorative treatments like fillings, crowns, and bridges.

A prosthodontist is a specialist focused on teeth replacements. They typically receive an additional three years of residency (postgraduate) training. A prosthodontist evaluates a patient’s smile and creates a restoration plan, which may include dental implants, crowns, bridges, dentures, night guards, or other devices.
